Physical Therapy Assessment for Pelvic Pain
The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and soft tissues that form a sling between the pubic bone and tailbone. They help to maintain upright posture, hold the abdominal and pelvic organs in place, and support control bladder and bowel control. When these muscles become strained from overuse, they can become pained and interfere with the normal function of the organs they support.
Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) refers to a wide range of problems that occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are not functioning normally. The pelvic floor is connected to many other parts of the body and can be affected by weaknesses or injuries in those areas.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction is often caused by infections, pregnancy or childbirth, poor posture affecting the lower back, trauma from an accident, or following surgery. Often PFD does not appear until long after its triggering event has occurred making it very difficult to diagnose.
How to Improve your Pelvic Floor
- Perform pelvic floor contractions as an exercise
- Keep a fluid diary
- Reduce performance of strenuous activity or extreme weight lifting
- Reduce caffeine intake
