Physical Therapy Assessment for Neck Pain

Physical Therapy Assessment:

At Health Loft we spend the time getting to know you. We want to understand what is important to you, what goals you have, and what activities you want to get back to. This allows us to create an individualized or tailored approach to match your needs and get you the result you want.

Your physical therapist will then perform an initial examination which will involve looking at the mobility of both your upper and lower neck, upper back, shoulders, and shoulder blades. We continue by assessing your posture in both sitting, standing, and your movement/positioning when you perform your favorite activities as well as sports. In addition, we check your neck, shoulder blade, and shoulder strength to determine if weakness in some of these muscles because they are known to contribute to neck pain.

We perform a thorough exam of your neck as well as all these other areas because we know that everything is interconnected and that simply treating your neck pain is not enough; in order to completely address your problem and keep you pain free we will need to also take into consideration these other areas of your body.

What you can do on your own to help your neck pain:

  • Improve your posture
  • Take frequent breaks when sitting at your computer
  • Avoid holding your phone between your ear and shoulder when speaking
  • Avoid carrying heavy bags with straps over only one shoulder
  • Improve your sleep positioning
