Blood Flow Restriction Training

What Is Blood Flow Restriction Training ?

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR) is the brief and intermittent occlusion of arterial and venous blood flow using a tourniquet while at rest or exercising.
With this technique, you can exercise using significantly less weight and still achieve significant gains of muscle strength and size.
It does this by creating a “cell swelling effect” of the muscle which causes an increase in production of Growth Hormone, Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, and Testosterone – all of which aid in muscle growth. BFR is currently used by professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, and NHL.

The benefits of BFR training include:

  • Improvements in bone density
  • Increased muscle size
  • Improved aerobic capacity
  • Maintenance of in-season muscle mass and strength
  • Preservation of muscle mass and strength during inactivity like bedrest or after surgery

BFR can be incredibly beneficial for:

  • Athletic populations

  • Individuals under weight bearing restrictions

  • Individuals whom are bed ridden

  • Individuals going through post-surgical rehab

  • Individuals whom are casted
