Food Allergies and Intolerances

Food allergies and intolerances can be a complicated issue. Either of these issues can happen from an early age, or they can develop later in life. Working with a dietitian can give you the confidence and nutrition education you need to move forward with confidence and learn to love food again.

Dietitians in Chicago for Food Allergies and Intolerances

Intolerance or Allergy?

Food allergies and food intolerances can be mistaken for each other and are often used interchangeably. In short, a food allergy is an immunological reaction to a food in any amount. This immunological response can affect many different organs in the body and can even be life-threatening. On the other hand, a food intolerance is typically connected to digestive issues and “problematic” foods can sometimes be handled in small quantities. It is important to know the difference between the two and confirm with a doctor or allergy specialist which condition you may have.

Common allergens:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Shellfish
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Milk

How a Health Loft dietitian can make a difference:

Once your allergy or intolerance is confirmed, a registered dietitian can work with you to find food options that work for you. It is normal to feel lost and confused after a confirmed* diagnosis and working with a dietitian can provide the support and educational resources you need to eat with confidence. We are able to help identify hidden sources of allergens in common foods and work with you to develop tactics to avoid or prevent allergic reactions. We will work with your allergist or doctor to discuss symptoms or reactions and focus on how we can best support and empower you to begin eating and enjoying food without fear.
